One of our most frequently asked questions is about wedding invitation wording. When you work with a professional stationer, there’s no need to be concerned about potential family drama. A true stationery professional can help word your invitation so that family feelings aren’t hurt. We all use a number of EXCELLENT resources that provide guidance when your parents are divorced and both have remarried, one parent is a doctor and the other isn’t or your mother is a judge and your father is a Mr.! We won’t know if you don’t tell us, and we may not ask, so don’t be shy. Let us know of any possible parental relationships challenges in advance.
There are both traditional and modern methods of issuing the invitation. A good traditional rule of thumb is that whoever is footing the bill for the wedding is the host and they have the privilege of issuing the invitation. For example, when the bride’s parents are paying the bill, the invitation should read similar to:
Mr. and Mrs. Best Parents
request the honor of your presence
at the marriage of their daughter
Number One Daughter
When Daughter Number One and her fiance are footing the bill, the invitation can read:
Daughter Number One and Fiance Number One
together with their families
cordially invite you to share their joy
as they are united in marriage
In both examples, there are a number of wording variations that can be used to convey the same message. Read through them and choose one that speaks to your soul. I’ve also had a number of clients compose their own invitation wording that has included short poems or quotes. As long as it makes good design sense, feels right, and doesn’t offend your family, then YOU’RE FINE!
